Introduction

Creating brand or corporate identities is such a great and rewarding experience. As designers, we strive to create the best corporate identities as we can, but sometimes things don’t go the way we want them too. And for that, we need to adopt a more disciplined process.

A corporate identity is more than a logo. It’s more than a brand style guide. It’s an essential way to differentiate yourself from your competition. A corporate identity. In luences your customers’ experience at every touch point. It subconsciously affects on how they view everything from your industry, to your relevance, to your trustworthiness.

But building that corporate identity is no easy task. You need a solid foundation but flexibility, an identity grounded in your roots but looking toward your future. It seems like a tedious process and it can be. It requires deep thinking and foresight, but the results are well worth it.

To make the process clearer and easier to understand, we will go through the step-by-step creative approach to building a corporate identity, specifically the visual elements of a corporate identity. A well-designed process gives you a ton of benefits.


Assignment:

The elements and principles of Corporate Identity Design (20%)
CLO1: Identify creative thinking strategies to solve problems in corporate identity design. (C4,PLO3)
PLO3: Articulate the design ideas through creative, innovative and effective solutions in graphic design process (Thinking and scientific skills)

On these assignments, students need to do a research on a good practice of Corporate Identity design elements.

Students required write and explain the elements of Corporate Identity with visual examples.

Students will do a research on the key elements of corporate identity design and find out what are all the facets that’s you need to build a strong, unique and memorable brand identity.

Your writing will include:
1)      The explanation of what are the keys elements of good Corporate Identity design
2)      Why it is important and the impact on the Corporate Identity design.
3)      The visual examples to support your finding.

The outcome of the research will be on Microsoft Words document or Pdf format. All of this finding and knowledge will be useful for the next task and you are expecting to implement it on your Corporate Identity design project.


10 Elements Of Good Logo Design


1.    IMPACT 
 "Impact design" brings together social, environmental, humanitarian, sustainable, human-centered, public-interest, and other related design disciplines focused on creating positive change and lasting impact.





2.    TIMELESS
Brand awareness is built over time, with a streamlined look and feel that is projected across all company communications, so that consumers recognize a business by its standard colors, fonts, writing style and most importantly its logo.


3.    MEMORABLE

“Good design is making something intelligible and memorable. Great design is making something memorable and meaningful.”





4.    VERSATILE 
A simple logo design allows for easy recognition and allows the logo to be versatile& memorable. Good logos feature something unique without being overdrawn.


5.    SIMPLICITY 
 “The principal role of a logo is to identify, and simplicity is its means, Its effectiveness depends on distinctiveness, visibility, adaptability, memorability and universality.”

6.    MAKE IT FRESH 
Do a quick search of logos in your industry and look for patterns and avoid mimicking them. 


7.     KEEP IT SIMPLE

The ones that give the viewer an immediate and clear sense of “you” – are clean and uncluttered. In general, less is more and simplicity is more impactful. 


8.    ADAPTABLE
The design of your logo needs to capture a viewer's attention without being literal.

9.    DISTINCTIVE
Your logo needs to be distinctive. If your potential customers can’t remember or describe your logo to other potential customers then you have a problem.

10.     VISIBLE 
 Your logo needs to be visible. In a crowded marketplace it needs to make an impact and stand out from the crowd.


Project:

Corporate Identity Design Development (40%)
CLO2: Produce corporate identity design to align with an organisation’s core values. (A3,PLO6)
PLO6: Demonstrate professionalism, ethics and humane responsibility, in line with the Graphic Design legal principles (Values, ethics, moral and professionalism)

In these assignments, students need to develop a corporate visual identity and are required to implement their knowledge and skills of design principles and elements in graphic design to produce a graphically designed artwork, and applying creative and effective solutions through logotypes, symbols and design styles. All of these exercises are to gain knowledge and skills in Graphic Design such as design elements, design principles, design process, color theory and typography, and how to implement it in visual graphic effectively.

Throughout the assignment students will go through the process of developing or creating a corporate visual identity for the commercial purpose and also tutorials to help them explore their creativity and skills.

1. Research
In this task, students are required to develop a corporate identity for a design project and your design will be use for commercial and branding purpose. Students will start with research about the logo that you want to do before generating ideas for the design.

Students are required to do research on the latest style and trend in visual design and how it can be use as a graphic images and devices in a creative way to enhance visual appeals for the audience. You also can combine text and images as part of your design.




2. Design Concept
Students need to come up with the design concept for the artwork. The process will include brainstorming, mind map and sketches. Students also need to finalize the items for the final artwork. You also need to think of the medium that will be use to implement the design.





3. Sketches and design process
Based on your research, create the design concept for your logo. Define visual elements or symbol that will represent the business and can be interpreted without words. Experiment your ideas with a various style of sketches. Vectorized your idea. From the sketches, you will choose the best design or concept of the logo and develop it in Adobe Illustrator. Refine the design and experiment with various composition of the shape until you get the right concept. The design should look good and clear of what it represent in black and white before adding the text and color, and also the appearance of the logo elements in various sizes.








4. Logo Rationale
When presenting logo concepts, it is often to have written rationales to accompany each concept. The rationales will help your client to better understand the concepts from your point of view (especially if you are not there in person to present the concepts to your client). In turn, this will help your client make an educated decision when picking their final logo.




5. Logo Guideline
Besides consistent use of logos, another unifying visual component is consistent use of color. This is very important for production purpose. This assures that you get the right color when the file is printed, even though the color may not look right when displayed on your monitor.

Students are required to design stationery based on the corporate identity that they designed on previous project as part of their branding and marketing purpose. Throughout the project students will go through the process of developing or creating a stationery design for the commercial purpose and also tutorials to help them explore their creativity and skills.

In this task, students need to start with research on stationery design first before proceed with design concept, ideation and sketches. They need to find out the process and elements of stationery design before proceed to design development.





2. Design Concept
Students need to come up with the design concept for the artwork. The process will include brainstorming and sketches. Students also need to finalize the items for the final artwork. You also need to think of the medium that will be use to implement the design.

4. Final Design
The final design should be print and mount on mounting board based on the submission specification and the quality expectation.

5. Presentation
Prepare design documentations and artwork for presentation and submission.

Students need to prepare the design/artwork on the medium that you have decided before and print. You also need to get the right materials or paper for the printing final output. All the final artwork must be properly print and binding on mounting board.

You also need to prepare design documentation showing your weekly design development process for submission and presentation. By the end of the projects, students should be able to explain and understand the relationship between corporate identity and graphic design.
